The DAM Foundation
In the summer of 2022 I wanted to honour Dave and his life and could think of no better way than via the one thing that has played such an integral part in my life and had provided the connection that had brought the two of us together. I made a commitment to myself to score 1,000 runs that season and to donate £1 for every one of those runs to the DAM foundation. I also set out to score a hundred in Dave’s name. It makes me incredibly proud and full of happiness to say I was able to achieve both of these feats that summer. Please hit the link below to share in one of my proudest sporting achievements.
In honour of David Alexander Mackenzie (10.06.92 - 19.02.21).
The Dam Foundation raises funds for defibrillators across the UK and provides support for UK grassroots sports clubs.
600 people under 35 die in the UK from sudden cardiac arrest each year. Research has shown that deploying a defibrillator within 3 to 5 minutes of collapse increases survival rates by up to 70%.
David passed away on Friday the 19th of February as he completed a Half Marathon in Abu Dhabi. He pushed himself to the very end, finishing the course in 90 minutes before he collapsed following sudden cardiac arrest. His wife Alex was by his side, and he was surrounded by dear friends.t is hard to reason why such a fit and healthy man has been taken from us in the prime of his life. He was in “the peak condition of my life” when he set off to raise money for the mental health charity, Mind. He ran his last race like he lived his entire life; to the absolute fullest, uncompromising in every way.
Dave was immensely proud of his family; the youngest son of Bob and Jane, little brother to Charlie, Peter and Cate, and twin to George. We all knew Dave for his easy charm, that cheeky smile and a glimmer in his eye that revealed his undeniable enthusiasm for life.
He was a devoted husband to Alex, the love of his life. Together, they started a new adventure in Abu Dhabi – a place they shared with the people they adored.
He was a loyal friend, blessed with the rare gift of making those who knew him feel special. Being part of Dave’s circle made you feel secure. He was a man you could depend on in your hour of need.
We are so proud to have shared 28 and a half years with our Dave. He equipped us with the assurance we need to overcome our hardest challenge yet..
